I was inspired to vie for club leadership after working closely with the club co-founders and seeing firsthand their dedication and ownership to the vision and activities of the club. I have so far loved the experience and the opportunity the club offers to interact with other mental health enthusiasts at the club and network with mental health professionals and advocates in the country.
I cannot wait to see the huge impact this club will have on mental health and mental wellness for years to come at Strathmore University and beyond.

Mental health awareness is a particularly very personal topic for me, and I found the mental health club to channel my passions and engage.
I find comfort in being amongst people who share my crazy views as far as mental health is concerned and despite everything that has happened in this crazy world mental health club, both the members and the friends I have created while at it was what has stuck with me.
Hopefully, the website will be a step further in this journey.

My name is Timothy Sang, currently in my final year of Law School. I am the Human Resource Executive of the Mental Health Club. I am a charismatic and very social fellow trying to tap into people’s positive energy. In my free time, I love engaging in outdoor activities and reading a thriller novel. I joined the club to understand mental health problems and try to offer a helping hand to friends and peers who are battling such. I believe in national and international awareness of mental health, more so in Africa, because of the neglect and shunning of mental disorders as a ‘white man disease’. My favorite quote is ‘And still I rise’ by Maya Angelou.

I enjoy sparking up mental health conversations by organizing meetings within the club. My style is to foster a synergy of creativity, collaboration, communication, humor, and hard work. I enjoy yoga, physical fitness, and mindful meditation as ways to improve self-awareness. I also love to bond over a cup of coffee and mindful conversations after all, what mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, and more unashamed conversations- Glenn Close.

My intention when starting the club was to:

  • Begin to have honest conversations about the poignant reality that our generation's Mental Health is increasingly becoming fragile, evident through the rising number of suicide cases annually.
  • Create a safe space and community for those with Mental Illnesses (a)To interact and encourage each other through words or art (b)To affirm that through treatment and care, life can still be lived and enjoyed with an illness
  • Demystifying that Mental Health equals Mental Illness, no. Your brain is an organ like any other and sometimes it too gets sick but most importantly, your brain does not need to be sick for you to take care of it.

I’m a lover of life, art, wisdom, and adventure! This club started as an idea by people who simply wanted to do something about an issue (other than complain), people who simply wanted to be part of the solution. From the small idea, it has since grown in multitudes, may our little big thing inspire you to always be where the solution and change is because it's the little things that make a difference. "Start where you are and with what you have”.
May you find spaces and little pockets of hope, encouragement, and love here in this community we've built, and always remember you matter, and the world is better with you in it.
